Aiken Tech offering CDL course, session starts Sept. 18

Aiken Technical College has partnered with Ancora Training to offer a new CDL Class A tractor-trailer course.

As the trucking industry continues to see a demand for commercial truck drivers, Aiken Technical College has partnered with Ancora Training to meet this workforce need by offering a new CDL Class A tractor-trailer course.

“Trucks are the backbone of America's economy. Every year, trucks move nearly $800 billion in total freight revenue, which represents more than 80.4 percent of the nation’s freight. The most recent estimates from the American Trucking Association show a shortage of more than 78,000 drivers. The CDL-A ATC training will prepare the workforce to meet those demands,” said Athena Freeman, director of the Office of Continuing Education at Aiken Tech.

“It is an honor to be working with Aiken Tech,” said Natalie Williams, vice president of client operations at Ancora Training. “A professional CDL course is an essential part of any college’s workforce development offerings, as it’s a viable career path for those who might not want to pursue a traditional degree. We are looking forward to training Aiken Tech’s adult learners,” Williams continued.

The course will be offered during the day and evening this fall. Day sessions will last four weeks, with students meeting from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday. Upcoming day session start dates are Sept. 18, Oct. 16 and Nov. 13.

An evening session will also be offered, with the class starting Sept. 18 and lasting nine weeks. Students in the evening session will meet 5:30-9:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

Course dates for the spring will be added in the future.

The course will be offered at no charge for South Carolina residents thanks to various grant funding sources; for out-of-state residents, the fee will be $4,800. To get started, those interested should email the Office of Continuing Education at Aiken Tech at [email protected].

During the course, Ancora instructors will provide students with practical, hands-on experiences driving tractor-trailers and teach them critical skills such as equipment inspection and maintenance, road and safety laws, defensive driving and trip planning.
